It is believed that Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine is one of the holiest of all Shaktipeeths. Perched on the top of Trikuta Hill (three summits' mountain-it finds mention in the Rig Ved) at an elevation of about 1585 metres; the edifice houses the holy cave of natural Pindi (manifestation) of Goddesses Maha Lakshmi, Maha Kali and Maha Saraswati in the sanctum sanctorum. The rock body is submerged in water and lies with a marble platform running around.
The number of pilgrims visiting the shrine is more than 10 million every year! Yatris have to trek about 12 km from the Katra base camp. There has been remarkable improvements in various facilities for the pilgrims. With donations and offerings, creation of infrastructure and other facilities are undertaken e.g. Yatri rest houses, Shelter-sheds and other welfare measures. The Shrine Board provides clean, well maintained budget lodgings;
