Ujjain lies at a distance of 54 km from Indore and 190 km from Bhopal. Mahakal Temple belongs to ancient period. According to Puranas, it was first set up by Prajapita Brahma.
One of the renowned twelve Jyotirlings in the country, the Shivalingam here is said to be Swayambhu (Self-manifested), drawing Shakti (power) from itself; this is said to be in contrast to the other lingams and images which are commissioned as per rituals and Mantra-Shakti.
The 3-storeyed structure houses the lingams of Mahakaleswar, Omkareswar and Nagachandreswar; in the bottom, middle and top floors, respectively. The Shivalingam of Mahakaleswar is huge. Images of Ganesh, Kartikeya and Maa Parvati are present in the garbhagriha; the Nanda Deep remains lighted. A metal Nandi sits right opposite in the exit chamber. Displaying an amalgamation of Chalukya, Maratha and Bhumija styles of architecture, the spire (shikhar) here is quite distinctive; the present building dates back to the mid-18th century.
A large sacred tank (kund) called Koti Teerth, built in Sarvatobhadra design is present in the premises. Find shrines dedicated to Lord Ram, Goddess Avantika, etc. in the northern flank of the main temple; in the southern side, find temples housing Vriddha Mahakaleswar, Anadi Kalpeswar and Saptarshi; these too are notable structures.
Kumbh Mela at Ujjain is organized on the bank of holy Shipra river, every 12 years and attended by hordes of pilgrims.
