DESCRIPTION
Considered to be a holy pilgrimage in the country, Kamakhya Temple is one of the earliest of fifty one Shaktipeeths located in the city of Guwahati, Assam. Find Mother Goddess Kamakhaya in the garbhagriha (sanctum). It is the main temple in the premises consisting of individual shrines which are dedicated to the ten Mahavidyas viz. Bhuvaneshvari, Bagalamukhi, Chinnamastika, Tripurasundari, Tara, Kali, Bhairavi, Dhumavati, Matangi and Kamala. Of these, Tripurasundari, Matangi and Kamala are present inside the main temple; rest of them are housed in separate shrines.
The temple complex sits on the top of Nilachal Hill and overlooks the mighty River Brahmaputra. The chief religious site of tantric Shaktism, it finds reference in the Allahabad Pillar inscription of Emperor Samudragupta from the classical age. Devotees from all over the country arrive here to worship and pay obeisance to the Goddess during the occasion of Ambubashi and Manasha Puja.
