At an altitude of 3140 metres, Gangotri is of huge significance for Hindus as it is the source of the holy Ganga; it represents purity and as is said, it washes the sins of people who take a holy dip in it. Further, it is believed that it took birth from the big toe of Lord Vishnu. The best time to visit Gangotri is from May to June and Sep. to Nov. As per legend, Lord Shiva received the Goddess Ganga in his matted locks. King Bhagirath revered the Almighty here on a rock, near the temple; this became known as Bhagirath Shila. The origin of the Ganga is at Gaumukh, a glacier present 19 km from Gangotri temple.
