SOMNATH TEMPLE
The Somnath temple is located in Prabhas Patan, Veraval in Gujarat, India. It is also called Somnath temple or Deo Patan and is believed to be the first among the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva. This Temple is considered one of the most sacred of all Shrines and an important Pilgrimage destination.
It is located in Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Saurashtra on the western coast of Gujarat. Due to multiple invasions and destruction by the Mughals and Portuguese, it had to be reconstructed several times in the Past. The present temple was reconstructed in the Chaulukya style of Hindu temple architecture. Somnath Temple has been a pilgrimage site from ancient times since it is near Triveni Sangam (the confluence of three rivers — Kapila, Hiran and Saraswati). The name of the town Prabhas, meaning luster, as well as the alternative names Someshwar and Somnath (“The lord of the moon” or “the moon god”), arise from this tradition.
